Social Media, What’s all the Hoopla?
By Kevin Needham
Wholly crapola (pardon my french)
This is big, and I’m just starting to figure
it all out.
I have been online for 11 years marketing and
building relationships and I have always known
that relationships matter.
I ignored, for who knows what reason, the social
media hype that has been going on. Well until now.
Probably because I just did not understand it.
It seemed so darn confusing what with facebook,
twitter, diggs, bookmarking, Youtube, Flickr,
friendfeed, Linkedin, and the list goes on.
It was under 2 months ago I heard about Twitter
and how you could get people to follow you.
I set up an account and started to play around.
seemed pretty darn easy to get the first
500 followers. I just followed others and they
followed me back. I would love it if you followed
me on Twitter also.
What happened very quickly is I got alot of DM’s
or direct messages back from people and they all
seemed to be spammy. full of marketing messages
and whoaa, I don’t even know these people.
I read a few, but man, I got better things to
do with my time.
so I started to look around and find out who was
being successful with this stuff. Was social media
really working to drive traffic to our money sites,
or sites where we could soft / hard sell our wares?
One name kept coming up, Perry Belcher
This guy is making money, lots of it, but that
is all a side line. He is having fun and that
is obvious by just watching one of his videos.
Marketing with social media is a bit of leap of
faith for you and I starting out. We kind of need
to trust in the system, because a bit of ground
work needs to be set up in the begining, before
you see any action in the bank account.
Perry talks about social media being a party and
you don’t rush right up to a person at a party
and say buy my widget, or visit my site.. you
have a non-business conversation first, and then
you tell them what you do for a living. Hey,
social media is the same.
So Perry uses Twitter to drive traffic to Youtube
(social videos) Youtube sends traffic to his
social bookmarking. Youtube also sends traffic to
facebook. Social bookmarks, Facebook, Twitter
and YouTube send traffic to his blog.
The blog is where he makes his soft sells for
affiliate products and some of his own offers.
It is a briliant system, and as he explains, it
took him along time to figure it all out. I’m
following him close to see what he comes up
I don’t know all I should just yet about social
media. I think I have the Twitter angle figured
out. I have over 8000 Twitter followers and seem
to get 200-300 new a day. The key there is no
Using Twitter to invite followers to visit your
blog articles like this, or a cool video you might
have thrown up on Youtube seems to be the
way to go.
My recomendation is to follow Perry as he seems
to be dialed into this social Media stuff. There
are others who know it to, follow them all. Seems
like that is what it is all about eh! If you know
of any good social media gurus to follow, post
a comment below. Let us all know what to do Ha ha
