How To Install A Blog
By Kevin Needham
A blog is just a web site. It comes from the word weblog which describes a simple system for many users to keep notes. The blog then is unique in that it is a design that allows users, both the site owner and his visitors to post comments.
Most importantly, it is very easy to set up.
1st off, you could go to wordpress.com and click on ’sign up now’ and follow the directions to set up your very own blog. You will end up with a blog address something
like ‘yourname.wordpress.com’ This would be great for a hobby type blog, something to
share with your friends.
What I want to show you is how I set up a ‘money’ blog, basically a blog on my own server space, hosted and owned by me. This type of blog I can make SEO friendly and move anytime I needed to change servers.
To begin, you need a domain name. If you need help learning how to get a domain name,
check out our article called ‘How to Get The Right Domain Name’
Then you need to set up web hosting. If you need help learning how to set up web
hosting, read our article ‘How to Set Up Web hosting’
The web hosting I recommend should have c-panel installed. C-Panel is simply a common
and easy to use interface for your hosting account. Along with c-panel, you need to
make sure ‘Fantastico’ is installed.
so, two questions you need to ask your hosting provider:
1. Does the account have c-panel installed?
2. Is Fantastico installed?
If yes, you are good to go.
1st thing you want to do is log in to your c-panel. This is your domain names administration area. You either chose your password and user name when you signed up,
or it was provided to you. The URL or address to your c-panel would have been given to
you also.
I like to do 2 things in my c-panel area, and then I really do not come back into
c-panel at all.
I like to set up my email accounts. I’ll normally set up
myname@mydomain.com
and
admin@mydomain.com
If you need or want more, feel free to set up as many as you like.
While looking at my cpanel interface,
I’ll click on Mail —–> Forwarders —–> Add forwarder.
Then I’ll type in my name, or kevin @ mydomain.com >>>> and my primary email address,
so any mail sent to kevin@mydomain.com will forward right through to my primary email
address. Then I click ‘Add Forwarder’.
I repeat the process and set up Admin@mydomain.com to forward to my primary email
address also.
I’m done, I hit the back button and return to my c-panel interface.
I then scroll down until I see a smiley face blue icon called Fantastico De Luxe and I
click it.
In the left hand column I click on ‘wordpress’ In the right side of screen I click on ‘new instalation’ The Install on domain should be defaulted to my domain.com, I leave it alone. The ‘install in directory’ I normally leave blank, that installs the blog right onto the home page of my site. You may wish to install in a different location, such as /blog/ or something, which would put the blog into mydomain.com/blog/ but for the most part, leaving it blank works great.
Type in a user name and a password, right them down somewhere
Base configuration leave all as is…
Click “install wordpress”
On the next screen, copy down your access URL, this will be your blog address (to see
your blog).
Click ‘finish instalation’
Copy down your user name, password and blog adminstration access URL
You can even request it be emailed to you.
That is it, you are done, you have set up your first blog.
congratulations.
Now read our article “How to Configure A Blog” for more details on what to do next to
get the blog ready for traffic. Not too complicated, but you need to set up a theme,
add a very plugins and widgits, edit slightly so it is SEO friendly, and you will be
good to go.
